Keeping Your Senior Parents Active
Retirement is a time for seniors to enjoy everything that they've worked so hard for in their lives. However, mental and physical health decline can tarnish this time for many aging adults. The problem is made worse during gloomy and cold weather like we've been having lately, when seniors can't go outside to enjoy more activities.

Remaining socially active and fit is critical for senior health.  Social activity increases feelings of self-worth and emotional validation.  In turn, these two factors aid memory retention.  Interaction with peers can also positively challenge the brain, which keeps seniors more agile.

It is normal for seniors to continue to live on their own as long as it is safe. However, an alert mind is necessary for a seniors to be safe in their own homes.

The following indoor activities can help keep the mind more alert and therefore keep decreasing brain function at bay:

  • Exercising: Helps seniors stay active.  When seniors lose the ability to complete normal tasks, it is usually because they have just stopped doing them as often as they used to. Our communities host daily sittercise that keep resident and visiting seniors moving.
  • Games: Keeps the mind active, making new connections, retaining existing connections and brain alertness. Garden Place hosts daily games for our residents, and your senior loved-one is welcome to join in on the fun.
  • Social interaction: Engaging with peers allows for emotional connections, which keeps the mind more alert. For example, through Adult Day Club and community events, our residents and local seniors create and maintain friendships.
  • Community Classes: Learning new things makes the brain stronger.  Tasks such as homework can keep seniors motivated to learn after class is over. Garden Place communities regularly host cooking, arts and crafts and other classes for our residents.

Springtime and sunshine is only a few months away. We have some entertaining events for our residents and local seniors to welcome back the warm weather. Make sure to visit our blog and activity calendars every once in a while to avoid missing one. You can also become a fan on Facebook or follow us on Twitter to keep up with our latest news and events.

January 12, 2012

Why do formal dances have to stop after high school? We believe our seniors deserve to have as much fun in their senior years as they did in their teens, so we like to host a ball for our residents from time to time.

Our annual Senior Snowball at Garden Place of Red Bud is in its second year, and our residents are excited to get all dressed up for a winter formal full of entertainment, dancing and refreshments next Thursday, Jan. 19. Relieving Caregiving Stress Around the Holidays

December 15, 2011

The holidays tend to have a pressure effect on caregivers. With all of the added activities and responsibilities, many are left feeling like they're not providing adequate care to their senior loved-one. Garden Place Senior Living understands that caregiving can be stressful, and we have options for your specific situations:

"I worry that between all of my errands and responsibilities, I'm not giving my Mom enough attention."

Providing your senior loved-one with mind-stimulating activities and adequate socialization is a common stressor for caregivers. A common contributor to senior depression is a lack of activities and interaction with friends, and many caregivers feel pressured to provide this entertainment for their mother and father. To remedy this problem, consider Adult Day Club, a way for seniors to get together and participate in safe activities under the supervision of certified senior care professionals. Garden Place plans trips, games, crafts and more for seniors in our Adult Day Club program, and we'd love your senior loved-one join us. For only $10 an hour, your Mom or Dad can enjoy making new friends while you run your errands and finish checking things off your to-do list.

"My mom lives by herself, and around the holidays, I don't have time to stop by to visit and help her with things around the house."

"At a couple of recent family events, I realized that my dad needs some help. I'm not sure what to do."

After seeing their parents after a long period of time, many adult children realize that Mom or Dad can't live independently any longer. This can be scary and confusing, and you may find yourself feeling alone and unsure of the next step to take in providing adequate senior care. We host a complimentary Senior Care Conversation for those who need caregiving advice on the next step for their aging parents. Free of charge, this one-on-one consultation with Kathy Asselmeier, Garden Place General Manager, provides information on daily living activities assistance, financial concerns, care options for your senior loved-one and more. Even better, the Senior Care Conversation is available anytime that fits your schedule best. Schedule a session with Kathy by calling (618) 304-0952 today.
